A current email purports to be from Companies House. A scam email instructs you to check the information held about your company and says that if you ignore this instruction you may be subject to legal action
Correction request: do not ignore to avoid legal action!
It is important for companies to ensure that all information held by Companies House is correct and complete as officers use a combination of manual and automated checks to ensure that information is compliant with the relevant reporting requirements. These checks should be proactively done on the Companies House website and not at the behest of a generic email. Alternatively, if you are a HB client, we can offer this service as part of your accountancy package.
With multiple businesses reporting the scam emails, Companies House has posted an official message on their website. This advises “do not disclose personal information or open attachments contained in emails. If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from Companies House, please report it to: report@phishing.gov.uk”
Tax Return scams
If you’ve recently submitted a tax return, watch out for similar HMRC scam emails claiming that you are owed a rebate.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) receive many reports of scam emails and text messages at this time of year. Be aware that fraudsters can falsify the ‘from’ text or email address to make it look like a legitimate HMRC source. Be particularly wary of emails urging urgent action.
Advice is that if you are not 100% sure that a message has come from HMRC, don’t respond or click on any links or attachments.
Genuine emails from HMRC will never notify you of a tax rebate or offer you a repayment, nor would they provide a link to a login page or a form asking for information – instead they will ask you to log on to your online account as normal to check for information.
