Business inspiration – World Simplicity Day
There’s no doubt that our modern, complex and digitally connected world can be a stressful place to do business. But did you know that Friday 12 July is World Simplicity Day? The team at HB challenge you to take the opportunity to makes small changes that will have a big impact. For example, consider what life might be like if you created space in your working week when you didn’t have to react to phone calls, employee questions and supplier issues, and instead had the scope to think creatively about future plans. Or consider what you might achieve if you could step away from time-consuming tasks like payroll, tax returns and annual accounts and make space in your life for more business development or personal enjoyment.

Benefits of using a local accountant
When you’re looking for a new accountant, there are a number of business benefits to choosing a local firm. We have many clients in and around our Hoddesdon office, which helps us form great relationships with them.
Here are our top reasons why you need to look for a local accountant:
Research – If you are thinking about hiring a local accountant, you can ask your contacts for recommendations and testimonials. Even if they don’t use the firm you’re asking about, they will probably have heard something about them from their contacts, giving you a better idea of their reputation.
Building better relationships – By using a local accountant, it is almost certain that you’ll build up a better relationship with them than you could with a firm a long way away. You’re more likely to bump into them outside the workplace and this kind of familiarity will help your professional relationship. It is also easier to meet face-to-face which is always more personable, and if any matters arise that you need to consult them about, you can easily go to their office to discuss things in depth.
Networking – If you enjoy networking, you’ll get to know people from your accountancy firm at some point, enabling you to build a personal relationship and find out more about each other’s businesses outside of formal meetings. These can also be helpful in terms of referrals. We organise our own networking meetings for companies in Hoddesdon and the surrounding areas, and are often able to put clients in touch with each other, or our networking contacts, which benefits both businesses.
Charities – Another aspect of networking is getting involved with charitable events and fundraising, which is something the majority of companies do. Supporting events organised by your accountancy firm, or asking them to support your events, can be a further boost to building a good relationship with them.
Local economy – By using local suppliers, you’ll be helping to keep the money circulating in the local economy, which is a boost in terms of jobs and prosperity for all the businesses in the area.

Benefits of Local Networking
Networking is a hugely popular activity for entrepreneurs and managers, and there are many compelling business reasons why you need to spend more time, if you don’t already, you need to spend more time at your local group.
Opportunities
Networking groups attract people from all sorts of businesses, so the likelihood of finding new client leads and even opening up new opportunities is very high. And if yours is a B2C business, well, every single person at every single networking group is a consumer in their own right. If they like you, they’ll buy from you – so networking has got to make good business sense.
It’s not what you know, it’s who you know
You must have heard of the phrase ‘people buy people’. You could have the best product or service in the world, but if people don’t know about you, why would they buy it from you rather than someone else? By getting to know people at networking meetings, especially if you’ve earnt their trust and respect, you’re more likely to come first to mind when they realise they need/want what you provide.
There’s always someone to ask for advice
Everyone at your networking group will have different experiences, and the chances are, if you’ve got a bit of a problem, there’ll be someone who’s experienced something similar and will be willing to pass on their advice. And of course, people will ask you for advice too, which positions you and your brand as trustworthy and helpful.
Honing your elevator pitch
You’re standing in a lift and, just before the door closes, in walks your ideal client. As you travel upwards or downwards, you’ve got just 60 seconds to tell them about your business and impress them so much they set up a meeting with you. But what do you say to impress them that much? Getting your ‘elevator pitch’ right is not easy, even for the most experienced salespeople. What regular networking allows you to do is practise it – dozens of times over if necessary – on a regular basis, giving you the opportunity to get it perfect for when you really are in a position where every word counts.
Making friends
It’s lonely at the top, and when people run their own business, they often miss the friendship and camaraderie of colleagues. If you’re working solo, networking groups afford you the kind of social interaction you miss from your time working in an office. At networking, you’ll meet other entrepreneurs in a similar position, who you’ll feel able to chat to as an equal. These business relationships often blossom into personal friendships, making running your own business even more of a pleasure!
