HB Accountants celebrated our 100 years in business last year and we have been looking back at our history. In this blog, we look at the range of clients we’ve been privileged to work with over the years.
Much has changed over the past 100 years and HB has seen it all! From ledger books to the introduction of DOS computers, and cloud-based systems, through WWII and mandatory National Service to the rise of marketing and PR. HB has supported many clients from a huge range of industry sectors.
Our original London office was popular with many City-based businesses including a number of pubs and restaurants, whilst the Royston office, which opened in 1964 was popular with the East Anglian farming community. We’ve also had offices in Northwood – close to the home of one of our original partners, in Redbourne and an office in Newmarket, which opened in 1989 after an increase in horse racing clientele. We even had space for a few months above a cake shop! We’ve gone from billing £2,200 per annum in 1921 to over a quarter of a million just 70 years later – and even more today.
Most of HB’s clients have been found through referals, back in 1991, we proudly stated that “we do not propose to compromise our professional integrity to partake in such activities to obtain clients from other accountants” referring to our advertising and marketing. What would the past partners think of our Facebook page and LinkedIn activity today? It still holds true that we’ve always relied on our performance and willingness to go the extra mile to appeal to new businesses, without compromising existing business.
One thing that has not changed is that our clients still love an opportunity to socialise when safe to do so – although what we do is certainly different! Over time, we’ve hosted many social events including the Hardcastle Burton (HB) Survival Cup – a golf competition at Harewood Downs and cricket matches, whilst today you will often find us joining in with charity events such as ‘Give Your Town the Run Around’ in Hoddesdon or hosting fundraising events on behalf of our wonderful local charities.
We also host our regular HB Accountants Ladies Business Networking Lunches, which recognise the number of female members of our team and the number of women business owners – if you are interested in networking with us click here
Unfortunately, the lockdowns of the past year have prevented us from celebrating our recent office move but we plan to make up for this soon! Many of our earlier client meetings were held in the licensed premises that were fortunately run by our clients in the pub trade – a tradition that we’re pleased to continue today thanks to the wonderful team Davys and of course their fab venues.
