As we celebrate our 100th birthday, we thought it would be fun to look back at the history of HB Accountants. You can read part 1 – our birth – here read about how the 2nd World War impacted us here. In this blog, we explore our name and home in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.
Did you know that Amwell House in Hoddesdon was our home for nearly 40 years. HB had retained it’s home in The City since it’s inception back in 1921 but eventually high rent and rates made it more economically viable to move to Hertfordshire. We’d had offices in Royston, Northwood and in Kent during this time, but Hoddesdon was strategically located close to good transport into London and the move suited most of the staff who lived north of the Thames.
HB moved to Plumpton House just before Christmas 2020. Our offices have a wonderful view over the canal and wetlands of Rye House and we hope to call Hoddesdon our home for many years to come.
We’re often asked about our name – what does HB stand for? As we shared in an earlier blog, our original name was B de V Hardcastle Burton & Co. This remained our name until the early 1970’s when it was officially shortened to Hardcastle Burton, or HB for short, after gaining the permission of one of the original partners, Beevor Hardcastle.
FUN FACT: Berry Hardcastle, Beevor’s son, became a partner in 1958 and brought many farming clients into the firm. He was once reprimanded for spending 2/2d on a magazine and a cup of coffee for a very important client in a nursing home.
