From 2024 onwards, Companies House has introduced important changes as part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. One of the biggest changes is the requirement for certain individuals to verify their identity to obtain a VIN number. This key step is to improve corporate transparency and tackle economic crime in the UK.

If you’re a company director, person with significant control (PSC), or someone planning to set up a new company, this applies to you.
Why You Need to Verify Your Identity
The goal is simple: to ensure that all individuals listed on the register are real people, acting lawfully and transparently. Verifying your identity helps to:
- Prevent fraud and abuse of the UK corporate system.
- Increase public trust in the accuracy of company records.
- Comply with the latest legal requirements from Companies House.
Who Needs to Verify
You will need to verify your identity if you are:
- A company director
- A person with significant control (PSC) over a company
- A member of a limited liability partnership (LLP)
- Planning to register a new company or LLP
Do Trustees of a Charity Need to Verify their ID with Companies House?
Yes, trustees of charities may need to verify their identity, but only in certain cases, specifically when the charity is registered as a company.
In future, agents who file on behalf of others will also need to be verified.
What is a Verified Identity Number (VIN) and how do I obtain one
A Verified Identity Number (VIN) is a unique reference number issued by Companies House once you successfully complete the identity verification process. It proves that you’ve verified your identity and helps Companies House link your identity to any current or future company roles.
How to Get a VIN (Step-by-Step) and Verify your Identity
You can obtain your Verified Identity Number by verifying your identity through Companies House:
- Go to the official identity verification page:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/verify-your-identity-for-companies-house - Begin the online process:
- You’ll need a valid photo ID (like a passport or driving licence).
- You’ll take a live selfie using your smartphone or webcam.
- Submit your details.
Companies House will confirm once your identity has been verified. - Receive your VIN:
Your Verified Identity Number will be issued and linked to your profile. You won’t need to reverify for future appointments unless your details change.
HB Accountants Top Tip:
Keep your VIN safe. You’ll need it when taking on new roles (e.g., as a director of another company) or updating existing records.
