A defibrillator recently saved the life of a family member. This is why we are fundraising for a defibrillator outside our offices at Rye House. Will you help?

Why a defibrillator is so important
Every second counts when someone has a sudden cardiac arrest – known colloquially as a heart attack. It’s a life-threatening condition that can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. That’s why it is essential to have defibrillators in public places as easy access can mean the difference between life and death.
The chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest decreases by about 10% for every minute without defibrillation
Why Rye House?
There is a map of defibrillators in Hoddesdon and you can see immediately that there isn’t one at our end of town despite us being a busy area filled with residents and workers, right by the beautiful River Lea, popular with walkers.

Rye House is a recognisable, accessible destination; it makes sense that it has a defibrillator just in case. And for those sharp-eyed people in Hoddesdon, there used to be a defibrillator at Rye House station but it’s gone missing. Maybe it was used to save someone’s life or maybe it’s lost, but either way. We want a replacement.
What’s a defibrillator?
When someone has a heart attack, their heart’s electrical activity is disrupted, causing the heart to stop pumping blood effectively. A defibrillator analyses the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers a shock to help re-establish a normal heart rhythm. They’re safe and user-friendly, ensuring that individuals with no medical training can use them effectively. Full instructions are on the defibrillator but if you call 999, an operator is trained to talk someone through the process.
How you can help
Defibs, the unit and the cost to install can cost upward of £2,000. Surprisingly, the cost of potentially saving a life is only around £1,000 with help from local charity, Hearts for Herts – so this is a worthy cause where if we all pitch in, we could raise enough money for two or even three defibrillators for the local area.

Public access defibrillators are essential tools in saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest. By making them widely available in public spaces, we can significantly improve survival rates and empower people to act swiftly in emergencies.
