If you need to get in touch with HMRC, here are all the numbers you need – albeit HMRC have closed their Self Assessment helpline, to the public, until September 2023… but thankfully Accountants & Tax Agents still have acess to an Agent Line and all other HMRC helplines are open
Getting in touch with HMRC can seem daunting which is why many people opt to engage with an accountants or tax adviser to do this leg work for them. Here is our guide with details of who to call at Gov.UK to speak to about your tax affairs
HMRC Self Assessment: general enquiries
Online help is available at Gov.UK for how to register for self-assessment, how to file your tax return and how to pay your bill

Or you can ask HMRC’s digital chat bot to find information about Self Assessment. If the digital assistant cannot help you, you can ask to speak to an HMRC adviser if they’re available.
You can also find information such as your Unique Tax Payer Reference, employment history or PAYE tax records in:
- your personal tax account or business tax account using HMRC online services
- the official HMRC app
If HMRC needs to contact you about anything confidential they’ll reply by phone or post.
Tell HMRC about a change to your personal details.

HMRC will not discuss specific cases or an individual’s tax affairs but you can use Twitter to get general help from HMRC – remember NOT to give any personal details. Start tweet with @HMRCcustomers

To speak with an HMRC Self Assessment adviser call 0300 200 3310 (+44 161 931 9070 if you are calling from overseas) – HOWEVER… this line is not being answered until September 2023!
Prior to calling HMRC for help
When, they are open again in September 2023 – this helpline may ask you some security questions. Make sure your personal details and address are up to date in your personal tax account or you could fail telephone security. You can set up a personal tax account if you do not have one.
If you have a National Insurance number and Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference have them with you.
When you call
This helpline uses speech recognition software, so you will be asked why you are calling HMRC. Try to answer with short phrases and words, for example:
- ‘change my address’
- ‘question about penalty’
- ‘late tax return’
If you cannot use speech recognition software, find out how to get help from HMRC if you need extra support.

Problems using HMRC’s online services
Contact Self assessment: online technical support:
- for problems submitting your tax return online
- if you have lost your online service user name or password
- if you get any error messages in your online account or on HMRC forms
Post
Write to HMRC at this address with all Self Assessment queries except if you want to make a complaint about HMRC.
You do not need to include a street name, city name or PO box when writing to this address.
Couriers should use a different address.
