Proud to share that HB Website hosting is certified green. HB are long-time supporters of doing all we can to reduce our burden on our planet – shifting our working practices and encouraging our team to do the same. We drive electric company cars, have plants in our office, have eliminated single use plastics, and consider our supply chain to ensure we make the greenest decisions possible. Now our website hosting is green too and it’s why we can now show the Green Web Check logo, which confirms that our website runs on green electricity.
How we became ‘green’ for our website hosting
We learned that data centres powered by fossil fuels contribute 3.7% of the world’s carbon emissions, so we decided to make a change.
The first step in our ‘green’ journey was to undertake a Green Web Check via the Green Web Foundation. This indicated that the foundation did not have enough information to ascertain our green credentials.
We worked closely with our partners, Webuseful, to seek out a hosting company that could provide the necessary information.
“Websites, amongst many things, are hosted “in the cloud” but in practice that means “on someone else’s computer”. That computer is using electricity all the time, so it’s important to make sure it’s green electricity. In other words, it comes from renewable sources. By choosing a company that can demonstrate where its energy comes from, we can confidently state that our website is ‘green’.”
Steve Jack, CEO, Webuseful
We chose Nimbus Hosting to host our site. Not only do they offer 100% renewable energy hosting, they are local to the HB offices too. We love supporting local businesses and view this as another way of reducing our impact on the environment through carefully considering our supply chain. Partnering with Nimbus is a win in three different ways: they are green, they are local, and they’ve made our website significantly faster! Plus, they made the whole transfer process quick and easy.
Jordan Knights, Senior Account Manager at Nimbus, said “We’re very pleased to be working with HB Accountants, another Hertfordshire business who share our vision for being a sustainable, socially responsible business. We’re looking forward to a long and successful partnership with them.”
What’s next?
Keen to work towards reducing waste and lowering our emissions, our next steps include measuring our carbon footprint and setting emission reduction targets. We are already #ActionZero Bronze certified and are working on our silver certification. There’s lots going on and we’ll keep you informed of our progress.
Talk to HB about accountancy and going green
If you are equally as passionate about going green, why don’t you review your website with the The Green Web Foundation? They are an independent non-profit that tracks how much of the internet runs on green energy, offering great advice about how to manage the environmental impact of your digital products. We’d be happy to share our findings too!
We’d also be happy to share information about our apprenticeship scheme, helping local people upskill and develop a career, or to discuss any aspect of accountancy, taxation and payroll. Do give us a call. You can contact us on 01992 444466. We’re accountants for business and for people. We’re here to help.
